[Interestingly, the night before I asked to dream about friendship, and what I can learn about it.]
Mina Goes Missing and I Ask Zeus for Help.
I’m driving down a highway in Westchester – it looks either like the Saw Mill or Sprain Brook Parkway. At first I’m in a little red sports car but I drive it recklessly and it flips over, but I’m okay. Anyway I’m continuing down the highway and instead of a car, I’m now in a motorized swimming tube, an inner tube. I’m enjoying that. Not sure how it works that there are cars and the inner tube on this road, but I’m clearly floating down some sort of waterway. Funny thing I catch up to Mina Chung, also floating in an inner tube. Hers is not motorized though. We are very surprised to see each other, needless to say, and we catch up. She tells what she’s been doing with her life and I tell her what’s been going on with mine. I have a hard time making her understand about divination.
We go to a museum. Conveniently, there are kind of water canals in the museum too. So we start taking the tour of the museum in our inner tubes. And then we come to a spot where there’s sort of a steep slope downward. Stairs for most of the pedestrians but also a waterway on the right that we can take in our inner tubes. So steep that I’m a little worried. But Mina goes in and I follow. I lose track of Mina, I don’t know where she’s gotten to. I call out to her and sometimes there’s no answer and sometimes I hear a muffled yeah… or mmhmmm. . It’s all misty ahead of me. So I called the museum security personnel over, and explain what has happened – I’ve lost my friend. The alarm goes out.
At this point a strange-looking woman shows up in a trench coat, with tangled hair, short, fierce eyes. She looks a little bit like Marion Cotillard. I know she has something to do with Mina’s disappearance. They had something to do with each other. So I confront her and she kind of laughs a wicked laugh, and says she’s taken away Mina for some reason.
In this museum there are exhibits about the Puritans. While the police records are looking for Mina, the woman says it was all in my mind, that Mina was never there, that she was dead and that I’m just fooling myself. But I say “No. Lots of people saw us and we were hard to miss, two friends floating around in inner tubes.” And there’s a general murmur of agreement for the people around.
And then I’m in this huge ballroom. A basketball team dressed in purple jerseys is there. I think it’s the Bulls. And they’re holding a great sacrifice to Zeus. They are associated with him in some way, because of the Bulls. Either they’ve won or they’re about to win something and they’re making an offering of thanks or a petition. I think, well, if it’s Thursday and if I need help and folks are talking to Zeus, then I can talk to Zeus too.
So I go up to the leader of the team. It’s a Christopher Walken type figure, all dressed in fancy 18th century ivory silk. He is representing Zeus or he is Zeus. I ask him if he can help. And he says that he will help when humans remember the gods again. I say “But I do! I talk to you every Thursday and I make sacrifices and offerings.” I explain who I am and how it’s just only my voice but still, he must recognize me. And he says “Oh, yes, I do. But what I hear in your voice is pity. That’s not what I want.” So I bow before him, straighten up, and shout two lines from the hymn to Zeus.
σεισίχθων, αὐξητά, καθάρσιε, παντοτινάκτα,
ἀστράπαιε, βρονταῖε, κεραύνιε, φυτάλιε Ζεῦ·
I give them my all. They are really grand, no trace of pity, and he is very impressed. He gives me his favor and I go off hearing him repeat lines to himself. “So-sichh-thon…” He’s chuckling, he’s pleased. Either he’s pronouncing it wrong or he’s making fun of me pronouncing it wrong. I know that I shall succeed in my mission.
As I leave the museum I run into the old woman. I think she’s an evil old crone and I tell her so. I tell her I will find my friend. And she says, “You don’t understand at all.” She says we have to find a text. One of the texts of the Puritans has a word that’s wrong or missing… There’s a sentence I don’t remember, but it ends with the word “developing”. Maybe it’s really “enveloping”. We have to solve that mystery and then all will be set right and Mina will reappear.
I don’t trust her, but she seems sincere. And she says she needs my help. I say, “what could I possibly do?” She says, “You are a character. And we need a character to provide distraction on the job we are to do.” And then I agree reluctantly to help, and we walk out of the glass doors of the museum together.
